Databases

The following publications and searchable databases can provide detailed information on the applications, specifications and distributors for several thousand alternative products in all fields of biological science, veterinary and human medicine. Note that new products are being designed all the time.

Producers are encouraged to keep InterNICHE informed about their products. Please contact us now for inclusion in From Guinea Pig to Computer Mouse. And if you are a teacher who has developed a product for improved teaching in your department, please consider making it more widely available.

Forthcoming 2nd edition of the classic Alternatives Book from InterNICHE, to be available printed and on the web. Fully up to date and comprehensive, covering all fields.

AVAR database
A large alternatives database covering all fields and educational levels.

EuRCA database
A detailed 3R's alternatives database for higher education,
encouraging user assessment of products and offering independent reviews. Note: includes some materials for refinement of animal experiments.

NORINA database
A large and detailed 3R's alternatives database for university level, covering all fields. Note: includes some materials for refinement of animal experiments.

Other Internet Resources

Searching on the internet directly can also provide relevant information. For a successful search, use advice on search strategy from the FRAME publication Searching for Information on Non-animal Replacement Alternatives.

You can also access on-line the recent monograph by Dr Jonathan Balcombe The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives and Recommendations. This looks at the issues in general and includes good information on alternatives and their applications at different institutes.

You are welcome to contact InterNICHE for advice on what products and approaches may be suitable for meeting the teaching objectives of particular practicals. InterNICHE has produced a multi-language video Alternatives in Education which includes teachers from different disciplines demonstrating and evaluating a range of products.

A wide range of products from CD-ROMs to surgical training mannekins are available for international loan from the InterNICHE Alternatives Loan System.
